A man is left to die at sea when the ship he is working on is sunken by a German raider. He is picked up by two pirates in a lifeboat, but their small craft ultimately beaches on an unknown island in the South Pacific. The man discovers a society of primitive barbarians and mutant fish people who sacrifice the two boatmen to their strange, alien god. The narrator manages to get back into the raft and flees the island, but when he returns home, he is clinically insane and confined to a mental hospital.
